Our infographic shows drone investments in 2021 and dating back to 2010. These investments are broken down into: total investments, venture capital investment, and IPO/PIPE investment. The infographic shows that drone investments in 2021 almost tripled from the previous year, reaching US$6.957 billion. Moreover, the share of IPO/PIPE as fraction of total drone investments in 2021 was higher than in previous years, suggesting that more drone companies are entering public financial markets. The amount of IPO/PIPE investment increased from US$25 million to a fantastic US$ 2,629 million (2.6 billion). Investment value for venture capital firms also saw a strong increase from US$ 2,002 million in 2020 to US$ 3,789 million in 2021.
As our infographic also describes, the amount of total drone investment since 2020 has been over US$ 9 billion. This means that the total over the past two years has been higher than in the previous decade combined. It is also worth noting that the amount of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in 2021 experienced an equally record-breaking year, with a total amount of 41 deals over the course of the year.
For more information on these investment patterns by segment and sector, read our blog post. Here is an excerpt from the blog:
“In 2021, we registered 199 investment deals involving a drone company. These deals amounted to a total drone investment value of US$6.957 billion (US notation: US$6,957 in Europe). If we compare this to the previous year (2020: US$2.427 billion), it means that the total amount of drone investments in 2021 once again doubled for the second year in a row (this year it almost tripled). Within this record-breaking amount, the value of venture capital investment was US$3.798 billion, and the amount can also be broken down by drone industry segment as follows.”
